April Secret Subject Swap Take Two: When I Grow Up

Welcome to Take Two of March’s Secret Subject Swap. This week, 11 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

My prompt was:  What did you want to be when you grew up and why, submitted by: dates2diapers2.blogspot.com

In case this sounds somewhat familiar to those of you who have been reading my blog all of this time (like there are so many of you, haha), much of the following is an excerpt along with a few additions from a post I wrote for The Getting to Know The Blogger Challenge, which I participated in through the blog A Little Unhinged way back when.  You know way back in the past in 2013.

As a kid I had big dreams.  There were so many things I wanted to do.  For example, one thing I wanted to was write science fiction like Robert Heinlein.  NOT books like Starship Troopers though.  Ick.

Another thing that I wanted to do was work for Industrial Lights and Magic.  I grew up when George Lucas was putting out the first set of the Star Wars Trilogy.  You know, before Jar Jar Binks, when it was GOOD.  (Sorry George, I mean Walt…)  I watched a lot of movies.  Keep in mind that I also thought Clash of the Titans was one of the coolest movies on the face of the earth at that time.  The ORIGINAL Clash of the Titans.  Don’t judge me.

Release the Kraken! Now it has so many connotations...

I also wanted to be an astronaut, because I loved space that much.  Then I found out that you have to actually understand some of those science concepts and be good at math.  That was as far as that dream went.

No great view for me. Thanks, algebra.

When I was in high school and living in Florida I wanted to join the Air Force.  I’m sure this was thrilling news to my NAVY family.  This was because we lived on an Air Force base (Patrick Air Force Base, for anyone who was wondering).   Then our circumstances changed and we ended up moving away.  Not being around all of that stuff all the time made it less of a dream for me.  I also wanted to go to Florida State, but lack of money for my family at the time and that lovely out of state tuition you have to pay made that not work out either.

I hate the Gators. And besides, FSU has glitter guys.

And of course I wanted to be a teacher because I loved school and learning and all of that stuff.  For those of you that have been following my blog all know that didn’t work out so hot for me, huh?  If I had to do it all over again, I would have stuck with early childhood education and hoped for the best.  But, you can’t go back.  I have to deal with the hand that I’ve been dealt.

IT NEVER GETS OLD! NEVER!

IT NEVER GETS OLD! NEVER!

Now that I am an adult, I have been married for more than thirteen years and have two very funny children.  It wasn’t something that I aspired to do, but it was nice that it turned out so nicely in that respect.

September 1999.  Weren’t we just ADORABLE???

My kids.

My kids.  They are now the adorable ones.  Most of the time.

The truth is, I never really decided what I wanted to be when I grow up.  Even when I was in high school, although I knew I liked education, I wasn’t totally set on it.  In college, I was persuaded to go with the major that I then attempted as a career for a few years before it obviously wasn’t working out for me.  I still don’t know what I want to be.  These days I am a Stay At Home Mom who is trying to make it as a writer.  While I am hoping it works out, I’m still not totally set on that being the one and only thing I want to be.

I hope you enjoyed my post!  Be sure to check out the other posts in the Secret Subject Swap!

  1. You were looking upward at the heavens, as a child. That’s beautiful. As a former teacher myself, I did not bargain for not being able to go to the bathroom. I think that is a barbaric way to work! Teaching is such an admirable profession. It’s hard to feel respected by society, when you can’t even go to the bathroom when you need to.

    • I completely agree with this comment! A person’s life can have many seasons and experiences.

By the way, your site looks great! Nice re-design! And I’m glad I found your blog. I can always count on a good laugh and entertaining writing when I come here (though I have to admit the title had me confused at first because I didn’t expect such a humorous blog).

  2. I wanted to be a astronaut too, until I realized how small the shuttle was and all that shaking on the way up, I know I would blow chunks inside my space suit. Great post! BTW.. were you 12 when you got married? Seriously, you and your hubby look really young.

  3. Never grow up and you won’t have to worry about it! That’s a pipe dream, I know. Remember when you were little and thought you could be ANYTHING? Look at your first paragraph, Sarah. You wanted to be a writer. That’s exactly what you’re doing. And science fiction? Pshaw! You’re a momma of two. You’ve got it covered.

  4. This is AMAZING!! Love the pics, love learning more about you, and best of all, YOU HATE GATORS YAYYYY!!! My oldest son graduated from FSU 2 years ago–we are die hard Seminole fans!! As far as growing up goes–it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. Stay true to yourself–and I think your calling is as a writer because YOU ARE SO FREAKIN’ GOOD AT IT!!! XOXO

  5. The pictures crack me up! Hilarious!!! I’m a lot like you. I originally wanted to be a writer when I was a child but then decided on all of these other careers. Now i’m back to wanting to be a writer, lol! I should’ve just stuck with it in the first place 🙂 Awesome post!

  6. I love this. I thought I was pretty much the loner on having no idea what I want to do now that I’m grown up. I did the trainer/math thing. I like the training part – for Navy and Army. I sooooo wanted to be an astronaught – even went to space camp!

Love your response to the prompt!!! Never grew up/Never gonna!

  7. Life is always full of interesting surprises. The long list of things I have wanted to be I have had some kind of experience as, while being a mother.
Right now, I want to be a philanthropist when I grow up. That takes money, so that’s what I am working on.

  8. sooo with you on this one! I changed majors seven times in college and the only reason I ended up being an English major was because that’s what I had the most credits in! 🙂 I still don’t know what I want to be, either, I just know I don’t want to strap myself to a desk for eight hours a day anymore. I can’t believe I ever found that fulfilling. But maybe I didn’t. Anyway, your kids are adorable! Love the glasses.

  9. For most of my life, I either wanted to be a singer, a criminal psychologist, or a marine biologist.
I’m currently a stay at home mom with absolutely no clue what I want to be when I grow up…..and I’m 30…..lol

  10. Now I love you more. Clash of the Titans (the original) epic! I don’t think I wanted to be an astronaut as much as I wanted to be the Captain of the Starship Enterprise. Jar-Jar Binks needs to be sent back from whence he came. How about Galaxy Quest? Opinions?

    • I loved Galaxy Quest! Of course I’m a Tim Allen fan and I love Alan Rickman in every he’s in. Which Enterprise? TOS or TNG? HA HA, I’m really showing as a geek in this comment, eh? Unfortunately I never saw Voyager until I was an adult, but if I had seen it as a child I would have soooooo wanted to be Janeway! 😉

      • I’m totally next gen, and if I couldn’t be Picard, I would be Deanna Troy, who wouldn’t want to be an empath? I mean really, who was the REAL #1?

      • I made the mistake of trying to introduce the 7yo to the original. He was scared TOO DEATH, it’s way more violent then I remember. I grew up watching it with my dad, and am pretty sure I have seen every episode. But I really like the “comforts” of next gen. I mean a Holodeck??? come on!

  11. There’s just so many choices, how’s a girl to pick just one?? I think we should be able to switch careers every couple of years, try out a bunch! I also love your wedding pic, and your kiddos are such cuties! I think the writing thing is gonna pan out quite nicely for ya 🙂

  12. Glad I’m not the only one who still isn’t sure what she wants to be when she grows up. But I’m pretty happy doing what I’m doing – so I’ll stick with it for now 🙂

  13. I think it’s great to roll with the changes and see what direction life takes you. Having set plans can sometimes be overrated. Look at how many people are stuck in careers they hate because they felt they had to stick with the original plan! I know others have said it but seriously, you and your husband look like you’re in a middle school play pretending to be in a wedding. Crazy!!

      • That’s pretty much how it works. It’s like losing my daughter . Had to find other people online to talk to because the rest of the world lives in a bubble that bad things cannot happen.
