What IS Twisted Mixtape Tuesday, you ask? TMT (I’m abbreviating it because I’m lazy and so I can say “TMT, It’s DYNOMITE! TMT, it’s out of sight! Oi!) is the brainchild of Jen Kehl, head mixmistress and ultimately cool person. Each week she tells us what to do and we do it. This week is the second week of music from the 70s, and she has commanded us minions to share more great tunes from the era.
Since last week I shared the music that I love from the decade, this week there are a few earworms from back then that I feel obligated to mention.
An ear worm is NOT one of those things that they put in Chekov’s ear in Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan. Rather it is one of those songs that gets in your head and no matter what you do you CAN’T GET IT OUT!
(We had a baby bunny in our yard once that kept nibbling on our garden. We named him Khan simply for the comedic value of my husband standing out in the backyard yelling “KHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!” This has nothing to do with anything in this post.)
American Pie-Don McLean
Have you ever driven your Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry? This 1971 song is about the day that music died-when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash in 1959. I’d hear this song and it would be in my head FOREVER. Then Weird Al came out with HIS version a few years ago and that stuck even worse!
Use Me-Bill Withers
Talk about a song that festers in your brain…
Copacabana-Barry Manilow
I guess when I was little I knew every word to this song. It’s probably the only Barry Manilow song I will admit to liking. It gets in your BRAIN, man!
In the Summertime-Mungo Jerry
I honestly had never seen this group perform until I saw a clip on TV somewhere, probably “I Love the 70s”-the clip I saw had the most stoned piano player I’d ever seen. I don’t even know how that guy was sitting up.
Sundown-Golden Lightfoot
My husband is a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan. I knew the song, but I didn’t know who the guy was until after I was married.
Next week is the 80s. Know what that means? As a child of the 80s, I will be breaking the rules and posting waaaaaaaay more than five songs per post! You have been warned.
Don’t forget to click on the cool looking cassette tapes to see other 70s fabulousness. And then when you’re done, if you want some funny in your life, check out the Humor Me Blog Hop! All humor, all the time! I’ll be back cohosting that very hop next week, same time, same station.
I definitely shake my fist at the sky every time I hear “Hotel California.” Or read a reference to it. So, thanks for that.
You’re welcome. 😉
Omg! You had to remind me of Weird Al’s version of American Pie.
My original post had it at the end, but I took it out. In hindsight maybe I shouldn’t have!
The song still played in my head nonetheless… 😉
1st: Love your Pic at the bottom… Ha!!! 2nd: I really like the “Destination” map… That is too cool!!! 3rd: Mungo Jerry is pretty Freaky looking… Ha!!!
American Pie is such an Anthem… Nice, Slu
Enjoyed. Have a great week.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! This was an easy post for me because I have so many earworms!
Barry Manilow. Here at the Copa….Enough Said. You are so right…tune is in your head until “Bye Bye Miss American Pie…” and I am so glad I did not ever hear Weird AL’s version! This is such a fun link up but it would seriously take me 45 hours to do one post as good as this!
Thanks for just a fun smile post!
Would you LIKE to hear the Weird Al version? As I told another reader it was originally in the post but I took it out! I’m glad I made you smile. 😀
Nice group of songs. Brings back many memories. I once worked at a radio station (WZEW, Mobile, Al) that played American Pie from 4 pm on a Friday to 12 noon on a Saturday non-stop in protest of a rumor of the new station owners doing a format change. Drove the listeners crazy, but made a lot of newscasts … and stopped the format change! Great job!
Talk about an earworm gone mad! Thanks for sharing that story! I’m glad that you enjoyed my post. 🙂
loved the grid thing! I have actually come around to liking ‘Pie’, having not been that much of fan when it first came out. Wasn’t that into the acoustic music… catchy…
Mungo Jerry… is it true that he is Sly Sylvester’s half brother?
I had not heard that rumor. Perhaps!
Crap. Now I’m going to be conga-ing around the house singing “Her name was Lola…” all freakin’ day. Great list though and I died laughing at the Han Solo pic.
I can think of a lot worse songs to be congaing to all day!
Who doesn’t love Barry & the Copa – I like to stumble around like Lola at that part in the song just for dramatic effect!
I’m surprised that my daughter isn’t more into that song, after all she is a drama queen!
Love your destination list and American Pie has to be one of the best songs in the history of time. I remember the first time I heard it. Music is power. OMG to Weird Al. This collection of songs is poifect, pal!
I’m not so sure perfect is the word to describe it…
Love Copacabana! Barry’s voice has the nasality you need to give you a kick of sorts. Thanks for linking with us!
I’m not so sure what it is about Barry Manilow that drives people wild. I really don’t get it.
I LOVE Copa Cabana! I’m dancing right now. I love that ear worm!
I’m glad I let it loose then!
I love your earworm twist on twisted mixed tape, very creative. And, funny, TMT also makes me think of TNT.
And I don’t even like AC/DC!
Me and my friends were ridiculous in high school, but I think we all were…and we made actions to American Pie. That brought back a lot of memories.
And my mind on repeat.
Khaaaaan!
Actions to American Pie? Interesting…
Good God I love Bill Withers voice.
He has some great tunes!
Ear worms- ha! And I can pretty much never listen to that Barry Manilow song ever again- or any of this other’s. So as for Gordon Lightfoot- he did The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, right? I can’t listen to that one either- when I was a student teacher (music) my 7th graders did this whole unit on that song. It makes me want to stab myself in the ear when I hear it now.
Yes he did do the Wreck song. My husband has the greatest hits CD that he drove me batty with for awhile, and that is on it.
I learned all the words to “American Pie” at camp one summer. I had no idea it was a “real” song and on my way home I heard it on the radio. I about died! LOL! As always, I love you song choices and will be adding a few to my running playlists. 🙂

That’s funny that you didn’t know it was a real song!
I was trying so FREAKIN hard to not actually listen to any of those songs as I added them to the YouTube playlist but IT DIDN’T WORK! Now I am stuck with stupid “In the summertime dee dee dee dee dee dee” stupid earworms.
HOWEVER. Awesome list, and I know the words to about 15 Barry Manilow songs I am sorry to say.
Dude, this isn’t funny, now my son is like “what’s in the summer time dooodle oodle oh doh” This will never end.
Then you’re gonna kill me when you see my 80s earworms post…
You have single handedly, Sadderbutwisergirl, listed songs that for sure attacked your brain and planted tentacles. (I like the “ear worm” thing) Very top 40 radio in the day….but those songs drove me crazy! Think I’m with Stephanie except I’d have to stab myself in the eye LOL
I didn’t want any kind of stabbing to come out of this. Stop the madness! I’m glad I made an impression though!

I’ve always said my entire musical taste consists of guilty pleasures. I now know it’s earworms that I like. I love American Pie and I feel like I should be familiarizing myself with the rest, ASAP. They are probably all my new favourite songs! 🙂
There’s some good stuff there-it just gets stuck in the brain!
Well, I’m sure it’s better than some of the stuff that’s stuck in my brain!

The post was priceless – and I almost got to tell Jesus all about it, as your Han Solo-Gaynor pic had me choking on my sammich!
I suppose I need to put a disclaimer up? Something to the tune of “DO NOT read while eating sandwiches!” I’m glad you’re okay!
And, oh yes – not post-related – but thanks for sticking The Music Man into my mental radio for the rest of the day as well…
Several people have got on me about that. The title has more to do with my life than it does the song, but the song has something to do with it too!
That “In the Summertime” song is such a total ear worm. And I didn’t know the guy’s name was Mungo Jerry! That’s hilarious. Barry – oh my gawd Barry. Yes, I saw him in concert twice. With my grandmother and mother. How UN-cool is that?? Sshh…don’t tell. It’s our little secret.
I’ll never tellllll….
Good list of songs! So different from mine. And you, my trekkie, star wars nerd friend, are hilarious.
Sometimes. My husband would often disagree with that statement.

Oh, how I love me some Barry Manilow!!! And American Pie – thanks for giving me that earworm present for the day.
You’re welcome! Now go SING!
