FTSF: The Most Unexpected Part of Being A Grown-Up

Finish the Sentence Friday

This is an updated version of a post that I shared in September of 2012. Things have changed quite a bit since then, but I thought it would be fun to rework this for Finish the Sentence Friday!

A couple of times recently the Princess has announced, “When I grow up, I will get to do whatever I want!”

I replied to this, “Ok honey, you just keep thinking that.”

And maybe she will, being the confident little thing that she is.

I can’t say that’s necessarily true for me.  In the last few years, as I have gone from preschool teacher to school associate to red cross flunkie to writer/librarian,  I have had several people ask me what I really want to do someday.  The truth is I don’t know.  I have no idea what I really want to do when I grow up!

That’s right.  I’m almost at the big 4-0, and let’s face it, I don’t feel like a grown-up.

As a child and a teen I wanted to be a teacher.  That didn’t pan out well, now did it?  I guess being a published writer is my next goal…  In time grasshopper, in good time.

The Princess has told me on several occasions that she wants to be a doctor when she grows up.  Or a cowgirl.  They’re so close, don’t you think?

The Professor thinks he wants to be a baseball player.  This is new, because up until this announcement he has wanted to be a race car driver like Jeff Gordon.  But then again, he has also informed me that he will take over for one of the school’s fourth grade teachers when she gets too old to teach.  Hmmmm… that easy, huh?

I must admit that I admire my husband for the fact that he has always known he wanted to be an engineer, even though it took him a long time to get there.  I guess that’s how you know you’re a grown up, you know what you want to do?

Therefore maybe I’m not really a true grown-up?

Hmmmm… A lot of grown-ups have bucket lists.  Someone recently asked me about my bucket list.  I guess I really don’t have one.  I have joked about taking pictures of different buckets and putting them on here.  I guess I don’t really have one because the things that I really want to do seem so out of reach.  I’m horribly, horribly practical.  Lack of money can really do that to a person.  If you can’t have dreams, then what is worth reaching for?

Isn’t the bucket list what you want to do before you kick the bucket?  Well I don’t necessarily have a bucket list.  I just have some things that I would someday would like to do.  Horribly impractical and probably will never happen.  But perhaps if I am to be “real” grown-up then I need to have this list!

  • I would like to learn to play the cello.  And the guitar.  I’ve tried to play the guitar on my own, but I really need lessons for a grown-up.
  • I would like to see another Broadway musical.  Or two.
  • There are so many places I want to go.  I want to see mountains.  I just want to drive to see mountains.  I don’t have to stay.  I just want to see them.  But then again there are so many places I want to go.  I want to see Seattle.  I just want to go there.  I think it would be cool.  For that matter, I have never been west of Nebraska, and I have been in a lot of places!  I would like to go back to Maine (where I am from) with my husband so he can see it too.  I want to go back to Chicago (where I lived nearby for a short while as a child) and see all of the museums and Shedd Aquarium.  I would love to go back to Disneyworld, but this time with the kids.  I’ve been there several time, I just want to take them once.  And the biggie-I want to go overseas.  I have never been out of the country except for Canada.  I want to go to Australia and China.  I WANT TO LEAVE IOWA.
  • I want to go back to school.  But of course, I have to figure out what I really want to do.  Therein lies my problem…

So that’s really it.  I don’t want much, do I?  🙂

Or perhaps I shall just not be a grown-up at all.

Well said, Mr Depp, well said.

Well said, Mr Depp, well said.

The most unexpected part of being a grown-up is… not being able to do whatever I want when I want.

Big Stuff

Finish the Sentence Friday

This is a post participating in Finish The Sentence Friday.  This week we had to finish the following sentence:  I once saw the biggest…

It was summer.  I had spent a hot day walking around with no real destination.  My stomach was rumbling, my mouth was dry, and I was exhausted.

Just when I was losing faith that was when I saw it.  I could see it through the windows of a nearby building.  It was big, it was brown, it was beautiful.  It was beckoning to me, calling me to come closer.  As I entered the room, it smelled wonderful.  Masses of people converged just to have a look at this magnificent sight!

All I wanted was a little taste. I wanted to be part of this like no other.  Just a little satisfaction and I’d be on my way, never to bother about it again… but alas I was denied.  Turned down, rejected…

That’s right, I once saw the biggest piece of chocolate I’ve ever seen in my entire life at the Iowa State Fair, and they wouldn’t let me have any.  😦

549725_3828482667487_2115772115_n

Yep, there he is, all that chocolate. Surely there’s someone would split it with me?  Maybe with a big glass of milk…  Oh that’s right, you can have the milk-I’m lactose intolerant.

This was short and sweet. HAHA see what I did there?  Chocolate?  Sweet?

Speaking of big stuff, I now invite you to transport yourself to a magical world.  I’m part of a campaign designed to try to get the dictator for life back into the driver’s seat over at The Adventures of a Misplaced Alaskan.  Terrye has been missing in action in the blogging world for quite some time and it’s time for her to start planning her triumphant return.  I offer up ten reasons why she needs to do so.  Please click HERE  to come over and snoop around.  It’s okay to check the medicine cabinet, but be careful!

If I Had A Million Dollars…

Finish the Sentence Friday

If I had a million dollars I would…

Before I begin we must have background music… (I love this song AND this group, I hope you do too!)

one million dollarsThis is only for fun, so no I’m not going to pay for world peace or an end to hunger or a cure for cancer.  So yes, I’m going to be downright selfish.  I’m still having palpitations over buying workout clothes on clearance with a coupon at Target today-it would be nice to not have to worry so much about things like that.

So if you were expecting all of that crap… Sorry people, it’s MY fantasy.

First of all I would sell my current house for a song (literally!) and find a house closer to where my husband works.  Nothing fancy, just one that is big enough.  With a fake fireplace.  And a tub that I can actually submerge my body in. And of course a man cave in the basement where Evil Genius and The Professor can plan to take over the world. And the Princess could have the dream bedroom she’s been lobbying for with a castle in it.  With a castle and a slide and a trampoline.   I could have my secret passage to my secret room where I hide and write.  Or where I could just take a nap without small people staring at me.

I’d invest enough of that money so my children might actually be able to go to college. Because even though I’d have a million dollars college is super duper expensive, especially by the time they are old enough. Oh and for that matter, I would go back to school too.  Heck I could even start my own school, like in one of my favorite movies Accepted.

I’d buy a car that isn’t starting to fall apart. Purple Prius here I come!  Maybe I’d even have a lava lamp installed in it.  You can run one of those from the cigarette lighter, right?

purple prius

I would name her Violet…

Invest in an indestructable yoga mat, that way my dog won’t be able to eat it.  A purple one.  Oh and perhaps a personal trainer.  A nice personal trainer that would not yell at me, but secretly coerce me into working out without me even realizing it.  And I’d get those meals that are delivered to your door so I’d quit eating so much crap.  Or better yet have my own greenhouse, and chickens, and a cow.  Or maybe not a cow, because I’m lactose intolerant.  How about a Sodastream instead?  Yeah, now we’re talking!

What I just did a million sit-ups? How did you make me do that...

What I just did a million sit-ups? How did you make me do that???  Oh.

Evil Genius and I would finally get to take our honeymoon.  It’s only 14 years overdue.  We’d go somewhere.  Anywhere.  Heck right now I’d take just getting out of IOWA!

Last but not least I would finally purchase that elusive self hosted blog and all of the perks and write for a living.  And I would host my own blogging party conference.  It would be The Sadder But Wiser conference.  And like in my recent Secret Swap post it would only cost $1.99 to attend!  There would be chocolate fountains and wine fountains and nothing would actually have calories.  It would be held at a water park next to the hotel, because that would be really, really fun.  Lazy river here I come!

Oh yes, a million dollars could be so much fun-I couldn’t resist fantasizing about that!  But now back to reality.  Sigh…

Yep back to reality. Hey I found a QUARTER! Woo-hoo!

What I’m Really Still Doing Here Besides Staring At My Laptop

Finish the Sentence Friday

This week’s sentence for Finish the Sentence Friday is “My blogging goals for this year are…”

Goals? Where we're going we don't need goals...

Goals? Where we’re going we don’t need goals…

Goals?  Perhaps one of them should be to include a Back To The Future reference in EVERY SINGLE POST THIS YEAR!

(Or to not use so many capitals.  And parentheses).

I could aim to use not so many references to bodily functions, but what fun would that be?

Last year I thought I might be on my way to making a living writing.  How’s that working out for me these days?  Not like I had expected.  While it has provided some very unique opportunities for me, now it’s something I do when I can do it.  Which sometimes is nearly impossible with two young kids, a husband, a house to maintain, and oh yes the paying job.  The job which just increased my hours and is about to give me a raise, because I’m almost off of probation, yo!

(That is the probationary period when you start a job, not as in ankle bracelet check in with your parole officer type of probation.  Hey look, more parentheses!)

And to be a “blogger” these days one is expected to maintain all sorts of crazy online presence giving and sharing on various forms of social media.  Some of that like Facebook that would rather show my stuff to one person than the almost 800 people who have signed up to follow it.  Frustrating…

So what the hell am I still doing here?

1)  Connecting  Because the online community is fabulous with a capital “F”.  This past month was definitely evidence that you don’t necessarily need to hang out with someone face to face every day to have a great support network.

2)  Venting  Because I certainly need that.  Even if I have to speak in clever code that no one but me understands.

3)  Creativity However weird it may turn out, I need a way to get that creativity out of me and into something tangible.

4)  Sharing  Because if I can share the weirdness that makes my family unique and make someone laugh in the process, it’s worth it.

So while I don’t have any goals, I think it’s good to have some concrete reasons as to why I keep hanging round these parts when I can.  As long as you are willing to read my crazy randomness occasionally and maybe get a laugh or two out of it, then I guess my job here is done.

FTSF: Favorite 80s Movies

My favorite movie of all time… I could not choose just one!

airplane funny

Another great scene from a great movie.

We like movies a little bit in our house.  We usually watch at least one movie every weekend if not more.  I was raised on movies.  We watched them all the time when my sister and I were kids.  The VCR was our friend!

There are three criteria that makes a movie fit into the category of favorites.
1)  Humor-We’re not into the all serious movies.  I’m not saying it has to be a comedy, but it has to have a comedic element in it.
2)  Quotability-There has to be several lines from the movie that we use time and time again in our house.  For example, every time we have an injury, we insist in our best British accent that it is “Just a flesh wound!” (NAME THAT MOVIE)
3)  Watchability-I say this because my little sister ruined many movies for me by watching them over and over and over…  If a movie comes on that I’ve seen before and I sit and watch it every time, then it’s a good movie.

So here in no particular order are some of my very favorites.  Note they are all from the 80s…  It’s not that there aren’t more recent movies that I don’t love, it’s just that these are my VERY favorites, and I don’t want you to have to sit here and read for two hours.  Even I have my limits!  I think I’ll do a post later on and include some newer movies.

My Favorite Movies (80s)

Drop.Your.Sword.

Drop.Your.Sword.

The Princess Bride-Truly one of the most quotable movies of its time.  I think this one takes the cake as far as my criteria goes.  How many of you send your family members off somewhere yelling “Have fun storming the castle!”

Sixteen Candles-This movie is still one of the funniest teen comedies EVER.  How many of you think of Long Duc Dong anytime you see the word “Automobile” printed somewhere?  I recently wrote a post for Theme Thursday that featured several clips from this and other popular 80s teen movies, including another favorite of mine, Better Off Dead.

A little Star Wars humor for you...

A little Star Wars humor for you…

The Empire Strikes Back-The best of all the Star Wars movies, loved by scruffy looking nerf herders everywhere.  I also love the original movie, but this one has always appealed to my sense of humor.

Dead Poets Society-“We’re not laughing at you, we’re laughing near you.”  One of the best quotes ever.  Also the only movie I can think of that moved me to tears.  Most movies don’t do that to me!

go awayMonty Python and the Holy Grail-It never gets old. If you don’t like this movie, then I fart in your general direction.  Watch out for killer bunny rabbits

Back to the Future-I love this movie for so many reasons.  The fact that it’s about time travel and they go back into one of my favorite time periods is just part of it.

no bathroomKindergarten Cop-If you work with young kids, you know exactly why I love this movie.  SO many great quotes, so little time…

Now it’s your turn.  Do you have a very favorite movie?  Are you like me and have to narrow it down to a certain number of favorite movies?

FTSF: An Island Life For Me!

Swiss Family Robinson

As a kid, this was one of my favorite movies… I’ve studied up a bit on remote island living.

If I were stuck on a desert island I would like to have… several very important items.

First off, thanks for the advance notice.  I am so psyched to be able to go to a desert island!  This is because although it is May 3rd, it looks like this here in Iowa:

IMG_1813IMG_1814This morning we have a two hour delay because of SNOW.  The kids have fought, whined, and cried nonstop since they got up.

So if I go to the desert island, do I have to bring the kids?  I assume that if I didn’t, I would get rescued more quickly because I would get hunted down so that they can be handed off to me.  So I guess they can come too.  Can they have their own island?  Just wondering.

Reg can't come either, that would be just like having children there...

Reg can’t come either, that would be just like having children there…

I would need a refrigerator.  It could be some Swiss Family Robinson type deal, it wouldn’t have to be fancy.  I would need some place to keep my Diet Sunkist Lemonade and my Sutter Home White Zinfandel cold.  I only drink vino on the weekends, but since I’ll be on a desert island I might just forget to bring a watch or a calendar, so I’d have no idea what day it actually was.  Oh darn…

I’d have to have sunscreen.  I’m very pale and freckled and use sunscreen pretty religiously because I’m scared of burning and cancer.  I had better make sure I have my big gardening hat.

This hat. The hat rocks. Maybe I'll make a tire swing too.

This hat. The hat rocks. Maybe I’ll make a tire swing too.

I’d probably need to have my laptop, because who wouldn’t like regular blogging updates from a desert island?  Or I’d at least like to have my phone, so I could keep the world informed of what I do via Twitter.  Important stuff, like this:

SarahA@sadderbutwiser
Made fire. I feel all neanderthal woman right now. #fire

SarahA@sadderbutwiser
These leaves really taste like butt.  Oh dammit…

I believe I would also have to figure out how to power all of this stuff too, huh?  I suppose I can also bring a solar powered generator along… or I suppose I’d have to bring Evil Genius with me so he can figure all of that stuff out for me!

So there you have it.  Desert island here I come!

relaxing-stormtroopers-2i40

I know this isn’t a desert island picture, but it still makes me laugh…

FTSF: A Day in My So-Called Life

This is my first attempt to do Finish the Sentence Friday.  I always want to join in, but I end up being either already involved with something else or am just a day late and a dollar short.  Not this time.  I decided it was about time I got my act together and just DID IT!

Today’s sentence was “A Typical Day in my House looks like”:

There are not enough words to accurately describe what a normal day looks like in the Wiser-Genius household.  So instead let me take you on a pictoral journey of sorts…

legos

Watch your feet. Every day is lego armageddon here.

I love this picture and I want to use it everywhere...

There is dress up, but not in the way you’re thinking…

Yes, he built it himself, because that's what he does.

Superhero suits are being developed and built.  Yes, he built it himself, because that’s what he does.

The Professor showing me some of the cool stuff in the "Lego Star Wars Visual Dictionary".

Books are read.  Many, many books.

We cook, usually healthier fare than this but I don't always take good pictures.

My family may seem a little unusual compared to others, but the basic elements of a good family are all there.  And that is what matters most.  I hope you enjoyed the tour through a typical day at my house.  Don’t be scared, please come back!
